The continuous training and empowerment of sport administrators and communities is one of the objectives of ECAS. Mrs Naomi Mabee, co-ordinates and facilitates training courses for community leaders in the various areas within the Eastern Cape on behalf of ECAS.
Vision: The establishment of a world-class network in education and training to maximise capacity building in sport and recreation in the South African context.
Mission Statement: To ensure that community members from the Eastern cape are being empowered through education and all get an equal opportunity to the programme, to give them an opportunity to be skilled.
The following courses have been held in the last 6 months:
BASIC SPORT TEAM ADMINISTRATION (October 2007 – March 2008)
Amathole (East London)
Alfred Nzo (Mount Frere)
Cacadu (Graaf-Reinet, Steytlerville, Loerie)
Chris Hani (Queenstown)
Nelson Mandela Metropole (Port Elizabeth)
O.R. Tambo (Mthatha)
Ukhahlamba (Aliwal North)
(1) Sport and recreation administration at club level
(2) Understanding people with disabilities in sport and recreation
(3) HIV/AIDS, sport and recreation
Nine courses and nine assessments were conducted in the target areas. The course content appealed to all those who have an interest in sport and the attendees are keen to use the skills and knowledge gained in their communities. The practical application of the course content was also a requirement of the course as the participants had to compile a portfolio of evidence in terms of sport administration after a 4-week period. In terms of attendance, the courses in Alfred Nzo, Chris Hani and Ukhahlamba had the highest number of participants and this is a reflection of the level of sport interest in these areas.
